Overall Aim:
An initiative by the churches of Wokingham to love and serve the people of Wokingham primarily through social action projects and inclusive community events.
Vision:
* The churches of Wokingham will work with people beyond their normal congregations and other contacts.
* The churches of Wokingham will coordinate their activities and share resources.
* The Big Idea will be a visible demonstration of the Christian faith in action in Wokingham Town and the surrounding area.
The churches will serve the people of Wokingham regardless of their faith, race or background. People will be given the opportunity to hear about the Christian faith, but no-one will be expected to listen if they do not wish to.
Building on the existing cooperation through Churches Together in Wokingham, the participating churches are partnering to work together so that they can work with and serve the people of Wokingham more effectively and in ways that have not been clearly seen in the Wokingham area for quite some time.
During recent years there has been a growing desire within churches for a united work across the Wokingham area. For example, a locally employed Christian schools worker gave a presentation which seemed to link with ideas of a church member at St. Sebastian’s Church, and also tallied with thoughts being formed amongst other churches across the area. More recently a member of Wokingham Baptist Church was challenged by the need to serve our local area, and envisaged a week of various activities, notionally called The Big Idea, where the churches combined to do just that.
From this basis the leadership of Wokingham Baptist Church asked a group to explore possibilities with other churches via Churches Together in Wokingham. This has led to 11 churches participating to help determine the size & shape of the initiative.
